Our story

Two Austrian bakers, one missing loaf

Grainharvest Breadhouse opened its doors on November 27th, 1989. Founders Hubert Wurm and Roland Berchtold trained as bakers in Austria, and when they immigrated to Canada they found the same gap: real demand for quality European bread, and almost none to buy. So they baked it. Two decades on, David Nutzold, who grew up in the baking trade in Germany, joined them. Today three owners and close to fifty people run four shops across Waterloo, Kitchener and St. Jacobs, and wholesale across Ontario. The recipes, and the standard, have not changed.

  • Founded 1989, family run for 35+ years
  • Trained European bakers from Austria and Germany
  • Four shops plus the St. Jacobs market
  • A separate gluten and wheat free bakery
Circle of Life, Gluten Free & Wheat Free Bakery

A whole bakery, gluten and wheat free

Circle of Life is our dedicated gluten and wheat free line, baked in a segregated facility so there is no cross-contact with our wheat baking. Bars, cookies and muffins that taste like they should, made for people who usually have to go without.

They offer a great variety of baked goods made in the house. I love their cheese pretzels. They also have gluten free breads in two varieties, both very tasty. A lot of European varieties, especially German. Very tasty.
